Our unique milling process allows us to provide specialized service and attention to detail ensuring optimum product performance to meet our individual customers’ needs. As we continue to grow, we are expanding our team with several key hires including a Flour Mill Production Manager / Head Miller. This is a critical, hands-on role reporting to the Managing Director of the company. The individual will liaise closely with the senior management team on production requirements and scheduling. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing an effective, efficient, and safe manufacturing operation.

Introduction

We are urgently searching for an experienced Production Manager to work in the Flour Milling industry with large modern Mills.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supervises the overall processes, products, and production personnel in a flour mill from grain intake to packaged loaded trucks with 24-hour / 7 days per week operation.
  • Ensure that the milling process delivers consistently high-quality products in line with required specifications by:
  • Adapt processes as required to optimize milling efficiencies and product quality.
  • Control process variations to ensure product quality.
  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to ensure continuous operations in the value chain.
  • Ensure cost-effective raw material management by:
  • Understand the gritting challenges of the raw materials in the delivery pipeline.
  • Optimize the extraction in line with the product quality required.
  • Monitor stock levels in line with milling plans and demand.
  • Ensure high-performance culture in the production team by:
  • Build and motivate capability through competency-based selection.
  • Training and development, coaching, mentoring, and performance management.
  • Effective communication.
  • Lead and participate in Invocoms and meetings as needed.
  • Ensure good discipline and accountability.
  • Establish good working relationships with union representatives.
  • Ensure a conducive and safe working environment according to the Client’s way.
  • Ensure full statutory and regulatory compliance to all health and safety and food safety requirements in line with the Client’s standards and SOP’s by ensuring training of relevant personnel, audits, and corrective action of all findings in collaboration with the risk function.
  • Ensure the best cost production through planning, organizing, and managing the function in line with the agreed expense budget and resource plans.
  • Ensure continuous improvement of the production process and function through:
  • Ensuring a culture of learning and continuous improvement in Invocom.
  • Perform route cause analysis when needed and ensure corrective action with relevant stakeholders.
  • Drive continuous improvement of production processes based on the feedback from the quality and the production team and do internal and external benchmarking from time to time.
  • Ensure optimal plant asset management through implementing timeous corrective and preventative maintenance in accordance with company SOPs and maintenance system.
  • Sets daily production priorities for operators.
  • Verifies and ensures products are being produced to customer standards.
  • Supervises flour mill personnel to maintain productivity, plant cleanliness, and overall flour mill performance.
  • Maintains and improves upon production efficiencies, waste reduction, and process improvements.
  • Follows, understands, and trains team in all areas of policies and procedures, including quality and production SOPs, safety standards and GMPs.
  • Ensures required company records and forms are maintained. Reports any defective materials or questionable conditions to plant management and/or maintenance.
  • Promotes company vision and supports plant culture.
  • Develop SOPs and PMs for flour mill processes and equipment.
  • Travel, as necessary, to meet with domestic customers.
  • Supervise the activities of a group of employees /controllers engaged in performing a variety of milling routines.
  • Verifies and ensures products are being produced to customer standards. Supervises flour mill personnel to maintain productivity, plant cleanliness, and overall flour mill performance. Maintains and improves upon production efficiencies, waste reduction, and process improvements.
  • Manage the smooth and efficient manufacturing of goods. Collaborate with management to understand objectives and requirements. Regularly prepare budgets and cost reports for production.
  • Production managers are often responsible for managing the budget for the production process. They may examine budgetary information to learn about expenses related to the production process, identify opportunities to lower costs, or choose to invest in a new system or process to improve production.
  • Responsibility for Mill Performance
  • Strict financial control of all production costs. (labour, energy and mill sundries)
  • Plan, control and coordinate all production operations at least cost, consistent with quality and food safety demand.
  • Quality and consistency of finished products
  • Continual operational improvement and innovation
  • Ensure Site hygiene standards are maintained.
  • Ensure Health and Safety requirements are met
  • Liaise with Engineering Manager to ensure planned maintenance is carried out at predetermined intervals.
  • Manage and Motivate production staff.
  • Ensure the on-going training programmes of relevant employees.
  • Ensure excellent stock control and reconciliation.
  • Liaise effectively with other departments to ensure that planned maintenance is carried out efficiently.
  • Liaise with the Technical Manager on matters of Food safety, Quality and Hygiene
  • Play an active role within the HACCP team.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (Desired):

  • MS Office (With Excel) – Intermediate. Calculations (efficiencies) – Intermediate.
  • Performance management skills – Intermediate.
  • Analytical thinking and problem-solving – Intermediate.
  • Internal FS Auditing – Intermediate.
  • Budgeting, costing, and cost control – Basic.
  • Proven experience working in a Flour Mill
  • Excellent man management skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • HACCP trained.
  • IT Literate
  • IPN Trained
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Strong work ethic, attention to detail and quality focus.
  • Management experience especially supervisory and team-building skills. Must have the ability to engage and influence internal stakeholders, particularly direct reports.
  • Must have excellent mechanical aptitude and strong math skills.
  • Able to work with hand tools and make operational adjustments to equipment.
  • Computer literate with experience using Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Able to communicate effectively with customers, visitors, and team members.
  • Understanding of PLCs and pneumatic systems.
  • Experienced in food safety audits.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Qualified Miller SAGMA/ GMF or equivalent.
  • Manufacturing Academy Certificate or Leadership and or Management Certificate equivalent.
  • Advanced OSHACT certificate.
  • LSS Greenbelt.
  • Lean Champion (Desirable).
  • Grade 12 (Twelve).
  • Food safety requirements (FSSC 22000) – Advanced
  • Supervisory and Management principles and practices – Advanced
  • Financial acumen to support planning, budgeting, and cost controls – Intermediate.
  • Performance management principles – Advanced
  • Disciplinary and grievance management process requirements – Advanced
  • Health, Safety, Environment, and Risk Management principles pertaining to industry – Advanced.
  • Continuous improvement processes – Advanced
  • +10 years of successful experience in a modern industrial facility.
  • +10 years of successful experience in production management, in the Wheat / Maize milling industry.
  • Milling or Engineering degree from an accredited college or university is preferred, a combination of education and demonstrated work experience will substitute.
  • Implementation & Maintenance of HACCP:2000 & AS/NZS ISO 9001:2008 Systems.
